Bascom Palmer Dedicates Auditorium to Jose Berrocal, M.D.

Surprising their husband and father, Hortensia Berrocal and her daughters Nina Berrocal, M.D., associate professor of clinical ophthalmology, and Maria Berrocal, M.D., joined faculty and staff at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute this month to dedicate the newly renovated Jose Berrocal Auditorium in honor of the very first fellow to train under the Institute’s founder.

Dolphins Cycling Challenge Raises Over $1 Million for Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center

The second annual Dolphins Cycling Challenge fulfilled its mission of doubling the first year’s fundraising goal. At Sunday’s Dolphins game, the Miami Dolphins Foundation presented a check for $1,070,000 from the Dolphins Cycling Challenge to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The amount is one of the largest gifts ever to Sylvester from a single event.

When Lisa Metsch, a newly minted Ph.D. in sociology, joined the Miller School faculty in 1994 to evaluate HIV prevention strategies for drug users, she noticed something both troubling and transformative: The study groups assembled to test HIV interventions included people at risk for what was then a fatal disease as well as people already living with the virus.

UM/Jackson’s First Heart Transplant Patient Celebrates 25 Years of Success

Back in 1986, Homestead resident Mark Frye discovered quite by accident that he had, at best, a year to live, so he thrust himself into the role of medical pioneer. Just 26 at the time, his heart was so enlarged he needed a new one, and he chose an untested but well-prepared team at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital to perform South Florida’s first heart transplant.
