Department of Surgery Opens Hernia Center at UMHC
The Department of Surgery has opened a Hernia Center on the first floor of University of Miami Hospital and Clinics with a multidisciplinary team widely acclaimed for its diversity in hernia repair, variety of available procedures, comprehensive approach, and cutting-edge technology.
Team members, who employ laparoscopic and conventional hernia repair techniques to customize treatment plans for each patient, specialize in abdominal wall reconstruction, management of hernia recurrence and/or pain after previous repair, hernias with enterocutaneous fistulas, mesh reconstruction, and complicated mesh-related infections.
Led by three co-directors who are among the top surgeons in the country, the hernia team can repair all type of hernia, including inguinal, femoral, ventral, lumbar and open hernias, as well as perform combined panniculectomy/abdominoplasty at the time of repair. The co-directors are: Christopher J. Salgado, M.D., associate professor of surgery and section chief of plastic surgery at University of Miami Hospital; Fahim A. Habib, M.D., FACS, assistant professor of surgery; and Jose M. Martinez, M.D., FACS, associate professor of surgery.
