Dr. Kozol was born and educated in Syracuse N.Y. He is a graduate of Syracuse University and received his MD from SUNY-Upstate, where he was elected AOA. He completed his Surgical Residency at the same institution. Dr. Kozol completed a research fellowship in gastric physiology in the laboratory of his mentor Dr. David Fromm. He was hired as Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Connecticut in 1985. In 1988, he was recruited to Wayne State University to become Chief of Surgery at the Detroit VA Hospital. Dr. Kozol developed an academic Surgery unit at the Detroit VA, which received national recognition. He was a funded investigator of the VA during the 1990s, with his lab focused on H. pylori and gastric inflammation.

In 1999, Dr. Kozol was recruited back to the University of Connecticut to become Chairman of the Department of Surgery. He also served as Program Director of the UConn Surgical Residency. Dr. Kozol has published more than 60 manuscripts on topics including hernia repair, colorectal surgery, gastric inflammation and postoperative complications. He has author/edited 4 books including "Surgical Mentor" which is currently available for senior medical students and junior residents. Dr. Kozol has been awarded several teaching awards at both Wayne State and at the University of Connecticut.
